Installation Work: Projection Mapping & Abstracting Nature

Johnson explores the forests abstract qualities with large scale installation and projection mapping. The forest is ethereal in the decomposition and rebirth within the organic material, contorting forms and various textures. Johnson reflects on humans relationship with the forest as we understand mortality and recycling, monetization of wood, and variations of organic material.

“Day & Night” - Installation at Beeler Gallery, Columbus OH

An installation piece called 'Day & Night' featured in the '2023 Chroma: Best of CCAD' exhibition. This piece was part of Kory Albert Johnson's senior thesis show 'Palms Planted to the Soil' in April 2023. Videographer was Jay Hubbard and film was edited/scored by Kory Johnson.

“Hocking Hills Tree Project”

Johnson was commissioned to design and install his interpretation of the Chicago Tree Project at a site in Hocking Hills. All the material was made out of recycled pallet wood. More details of installation below.

“Rise, Fall & Rise Again” - Installation in Hocking Hills, OH 2023

Johnson contemplated the nature of decomposition in the forest and cycles of rebirth. Our understanding of the term ‘growing’ in the context of nature, is often associated with sunlight, water, and gravity, as trees and other vegetation in the forest climbs towards optimal nutrition. As a tree comes to the end of its cycle, it begins to decompose. This is necessary for new life to form as organic material breaks down and restructures, taking various new shapes in the woods. The vibrant colors symbolize the spectrum of organisms, harmonizing and reorganizing to become new life.

“If a Tree Falls” - Installation in Hocking Hills OH 2023

Johnson reflected on the phrase “If a tree falls in the forest, does it make a sound?” Disassembling discarded pallets to recycle and reuse the material, the wood at times will shatter in the process. This inspired the ‘broken mirror’ pallets, reflecting on the collision of two objects: the “impact” of a tree falling in the forest. Johnson began to reflect on sound in relation to these notions, how we experience sound and how we understand this visually. Sound waves inspired the second aspect of this installation, vertically shifting pointed pallets mimicking the motions of recorded audio as they climb the tree.
