2D Work: Impressions of the Unknown
Currently, Johnson is working towards a surreal approach to his experience in nature and reflection on the temporal qualities of the forest. When first working with oil paints, Johnson used fictional depictions of ghosts as representation of death and manifestations of a haunting. In 2022, Johnson discovered a less macabre way to discuss mortality. In the forest, life and death coexist. The death of trees and other organisms is natural and essential for new life to flourish. The subjects of Johnson’s work is abstractions of microlevel moments in the forest, highlighting the beauty of the transient surroundings.
